The Open Book Initiative: Professional Development

Professional Development and Training Model Summary

Professional development is the cornerstone of The Open Book Initiative. Training will be provided for teachers, principals, Reading Fellows (often referred to as coaches or mentors), preschool teachers and care providers, and parents. Each of these groups will attend planned, research-based training opportunities taught by the most knowledgeable and qualified instructors. Built into the design of The Open Book Initiative is an embedded yet clearly structured professional development component that is recognized as critical to real change in classroom practices, student learning, and change in teachers' attitudes and beliefs (Guskey, 2000). This embedded professional development takes place through regular collaboration with colleagues, support from Reading Fellows, and individual teacher evaluation of their instructional practices and student learning.

Each of The Open Book Initiative training and professional development structures is outlined in this document.
