Joe and Kathryn Albertson met at the College of Idaho, left college in 1930 to take jobs during the Depression, built the grocery store chain that bears their family name, then established the Foundation in 1966 as a way to administer their giving and to open doors for others.

Our Founding Donors
Joe and Kathryn Albertson

The J.A. & Kathryn Albertson Foundation is a family foundation committed and striving to be a catalyst for positive educational change, reform and improvement in Idaho.

The Foundation was established in 1966 by Joe Albertson and his wife, Kathryn. From its beginning, the Foundation gave to a variety of charitable causes within Idaho, where the couple met, married and raised their daughter, Barbara. As the Foundation's assets grew, its giving began to focus primarily on one area -- Idaho education.

Joe Albertson passed away in 1993. In 1997, Kathryn gave a generous gift of $660 million worth of Albertson's Incorporated stock to the Foundation, which propelled its giving level from approximately $2.5 million a year to more than $35 million. Kathryn was a Director Emeritus on the Foundation's Board of Directors until her passing in April, 2002.

Foundation giving remains earmarked for Idaho education improvement.
